The Lucy Wedding DJ

Remixologists provides wedding DJ and entertainment services at The Lucy, the Cescaphe venue on Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts. We’ve worked there before: DJ Benja Styles played the wedding of Sarah Nguyen and Len Ung. Ceremony room is turned over for the reception while guests are upstairs, so the entertainment team supplies all of the sound and has to work to a fixed timeline across the evening.

Past the logistics, The Lucy is a pleasure to design music for. The style is new traditional: brass chandeliers, marble, ivory paneling, painted white brick and chevron wood floors. It sits right off the energy of Broad Street, and the whole wedding can happen in one building across two floors. The job is to make that sequence feel deliberate, from the first quiet notes of the ceremony to the last song of the night.

What Makes a Wedding at The Lucy Different

What Makes a Wedding at The Lucy Different

A wedding at The Lucy moves through the building in a set order. According to Cescaphe, receptions take place in the Grand Ballroom, and cocktails are served on the second-floor Mezzanine, which overlooks the ballroom. In our experience, the ceremony happens on the first floor and that room is then flipped for the reception.

That order shapes the entertainment plan in three ways.

  • The DJ brings the whole sound system. The Lucy doesn’t provide one, so the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception audio all come from your entertainment team.
  • Reception setup happens during cocktail hour. While guests are upstairs, the reception system is built in the room where the vows just took place.
  • The rooms are large. The spaces run long and the reception room is very big. Speaker placement has to be planned so guests at the far end hear the room the same way as guests near the DJ.
The Spaces and the Timeline

The Spaces and the Timeline

Ceremony on the first floor. Cescaphe describes ceremonies at The Lucy as intimate, held just inside from Broad Street in front of close friends and family. Hosting the ceremony on-site adds half an hour to Cescaphe’s six-hour event. The Lucy also has a private green room with its own entrance, so the couple has somewhere to wait out of sight before the processional.

Since the venue has no house system, ceremony sound comes from the DJ. That covers prelude music as guests arrive, the processional, the recessional and microphones for the officiant and readers. The ceremony room is long, so we plan speaker coverage so the vows reach the last row as clearly as the first.

Cocktail hour-and-a-half on the Mezzanine. Cescaphe’s signature cocktail hour-and-a-half is held on the second-floor Mezzanine, a room with whitewashed brick, large picture windows and custom bars that looks down over the ballroom. It’s the longest stretch of the night before dinner, and it needs its own soundtrack: something with personality that suits conversation without flattening into background noise.

It’s also when the reception gets built downstairs. At The Lucy, the cocktail-hour music and the reception setup run at the same time. Planning staff and equipment for that is part of how we approach this venue.

Reception in the Grand Ballroom. Cescaphe describes the Grand Ballroom’s new traditional design as chevron wood floors with custom carpeting. It’s a big room, and it has to handle every mood of the reception: grand entrances, toasts, dinner, first dances and the later hours. Because the room is large, we plan speaker placement and sometimes add wireless speakers so the sound is balanced across the whole space.

How Music Moves Through a Wedding at The Lucy

How Music Moves Through a Wedding at The Lucy

The Lucy’s order of events gives the soundtrack a natural arc. We build it in four parts.

  • Ceremony: Prelude, processional and recessional selections picked for meaning and timed to the walk, with clear audio for everyone speaking.
  • Cocktail hour on the Mezzanine: Ninety minutes of music drawn from what you actually listen to. That might be soul, jazz, R&B, indie or global sounds, with enough energy to set up the night ahead.
  • Dinner and formalities in the Grand Ballroom: Introductions, toasts and special dances announced with a warm, clear MC voice. The music stays underneath the conversation rather than over it.
  • Dancing: Live mixing that follows the room as it happens, building energy gradually and shifting as the crowd shows us what it wants.
The Remixologists Approach to Soundtrack Design

The Remixologists Approach to Soundtrack Design

Our work at The Lucy comes from being there. DJ Benja Styles DJ’d Sarah Nguyen and Len Ung’s wedding, and several details on this page come from that experience: the load-in, the room flip, the setup window during cocktail hour and the size of the spaces.

Our Music Design process starts with your taste: the songs, artists and references that are really yours. From there we work out how that identity plays across ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and dancing. The goal is a soundtrack that sounds like the two of you, paced to how a wedding actually unfolds.

At a venue like The Lucy, that creative work sits alongside close coordination with the Cescaphe team, your planner, your photographer and anyone else working the room. The soundtrack only works if the timeline and setup behind it are solid.

The Lucy Wedding DJ FAQs

The Lucy Wedding DJ FAQs

Does The Lucy provide AV, or does the DJ bring equipment?

The Lucy does not have an in-house sound system. At a wedding there, the DJ supplies the speakers, microphones and other sound equipment for the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. Ask your entertainment team exactly what’s included for each part of the day.

Can the same DJ handle the ceremony and the reception at The Lucy?

Yes. Remixologists provides ceremony music and sound as well as reception entertainment. At The Lucy, the ceremony is on the first floor and the room is then flipped for the reception, so the reception system is set up during the Mezzanine cocktail hour

How long is a wedding at The Lucy?

Cescaphe describes a wedding at The Lucy as a six-hour affair, with half an hour added when the ceremony is also held there. That includes Cescaphe’s signature cocktail hour-and-a-half on the Mezzanine.

What should couples confirm before booking entertainment at The Lucy?

Confirm your final timeline, including the ceremony, the cocktail hour-and-a-half and when the room flip happens. Also ask about vendor load-in times and any requirements such as insurance, and let your DJ know if a ceremony at The Lucy is part of the plan.

Can live musicians be incorporated alongside a DJ?

Yes. We layer live musicians (drummer & sax) into a DJ-led set for cocktail hour or reception.

Planning Your Wedding at The Lucy

Planning Your Wedding at The Lucy

If you’re planning a wedding at The Lucy, start the entertainment conversation with the day itself: where the ceremony happens, how guests move upstairs and back down, and what each room needs to sound like. The playlist comes after that. A soundtrack that fits this venue is built around its flow.
