Providence NYC Event DJ Recap: Taste of Success 2011

Important note: Providence NYC has permanently closed. Its building at 311 West 57th Street is being turned into Arts 57, a 250-seat Off-Broadway theater. We’re keeping this recap online as a record of a night we loved in a room many New Yorkers still remember.

Providence NYC at 311 West 57th Street

Few Manhattan event spaces had a history like Providence. The building started life as a church, with cathedral-height ceilings, stained glass and heavy wooden doors. In 1969 it became Mediasound, a recording studio where major artists cut records for decades. In the 1990s it turned into a string of nightclubs, and Providence was one of the best known.

For event planners, Providence offered two very different spaces under one roof. The main floor was grand enough for a formal reception, with high ceilings that made a crowd of several hundred feel spacious. The lower level was a proper club, with a low-lit room made for dancing once the formal program ended. That layout let a host run a polished cocktail event upstairs and an after-party downstairs without guests ever leaving the building.

At a glance (historical):

  • Address: 311 W 57th St, between 8th and 9th Avenues, Hell’s Kitchen
  • Style: Former church and recording studio turned nightclub and event venue
  • Best suited for: Galas, fundraisers, corporate receptions and late-night parties
  • Status: Permanently closed; being redeveloped as the Arts 57 theater

The DJ Experience: Two Rooms, Two Moods

DJing a venue with a split layout means reading two separate crowds in one night. Upstairs, the music had to support conversation. Guests were networking, tasting food from sponsors and moving between tables, so the set stayed upbeat without taking over. We kept the energy steady and the volume at a level where people could talk to new contacts.

When the program ended, the job changed. The lower-level club called for a real dance set, and it took a smooth handoff to bring a crowd in business attire from mingling to dancing. Good event DJing is mostly about timing: knowing when a room wants background music and when it’s ready to party. Providence tested both in a single evening.

Featured Event: Taste of Success 2011 for Streetwise Partners

On a rainy Thursday night, more than 400 guests filled Providence NYC for the 4th Annual Taste of Success, presented by Streetwise Partners, a New York nonprofit that pairs professionals with job seekers for mentoring and career support. It was our second year in a row playing this fundraiser, and we were happy to be back.

The event was a tasting celebration, and the sponsors went all out. Between sets, our DJ walked the room and tried as much as possible. The favorite bite of the night was the tuna tartare from Buddakan, and the Moët kept flowing thanks to the event’s generous supporters. Every plate and pour helped fund Streetwise Partners’ work.

The official program ended at 10 p.m., but the night kept going. Guests moved down to the club level, and the suits and cocktail dresses were no match for the dance floor. This polished crowd danced hard. We’ve been told the after-party photos should stay private, and we’ll respect that. Mostly.
