Food, Drink, & Music! Our Contribution To The Taiwanese (TAP) Night Market!

The Remixologists love representing for our cities and cultures.  So when our friends at TAP NY (Taiwanese American Professionals) asked us at the start of the year to provide the music for their first annual night market, we of course said YES… and that was before we were told about the UNLIMITED FOOD & TAIWAN BEER!  Well, the sold out event (folks were scalping tickets on Craigslist!)  this past April had over 500 attendees and went off CRAZY!

We spun a 4 hour set playing off the vibe of the crowd covering everything from Michael Jackson, Hall & Oates, Keane, Chromeo, Rihanna, and everything in between.  Everybody had a great time and I definitely saw more than a few folks with glazed ‘food coma’ eyes from downing all the delicious food and drinks.

And true story, I recently got a call from Hong Kong Street Cart (one of the food vendors from the night) asking if we could make them some mixes for their upcoming pop-up markets.  Maybe I can parlay that into a year’s supply of buns & bubble teas… hmm… definitely going to try and make this happen.  🙂

In the meantime, click on the picture up above to read more about the event and below for the mouth watering recap (look for my photobomb!) from The Village Voice Blogs.  And if prefer moving visuals, check out the short video recap below featuring the music and a quick cameo from DJ Taiga.

SXSW Translation Event Mix Part 1

Back in March (literally 3 days before SXSW started), we were commissioned by Translation (you know, that little advertising company started by Jay-Z) for a 5 hour live mix for their exclusive cocktail party honoring Steve Stoute & Nas (check out their interview here).  Curating an eclectic mix of music for a diverse crowd of SXSW performers and attendees alike is not for the faint of heart, but we set out to do just that with a flowing soundtrack of hip hop, indie, classics, electro, and even a splash of dubstep.

With summer upon us, road trips and beach outings imminent, this is the perfect time to add new music to your iPods and playlists.  We are proud to present the first part (of 4) for your listening pleasures.

SoHo Penthouse Party… Housewarming in Style!

Happy New Year folks!

Last fall we spun a housewarming party in SoHo (think 3 story penthouse… pretty big for New York City standards if you ask me… or ALMOST anyone in NYC)! We provided sound coverage on all 3 floors plus 2 outdoor terraces (shout out to Mike for sound engineering) and had the turntables and mixer centrally stationed on the 2nd floor. There were certainly a few complaints from the neighbors that night. 😉

With the music bumping plus 3 full bars (one on each floor) and a private chef preparing tasty concoctions such as toasted raviolis, sushi & sashimi, and homemade potato chips with caviar and creme fraiche, the party was BANANAS! When it came time to wind things down at 3am, well… it didn’t. We were asked to keep rocking for another hour… and we happily obliged!

And the best part of the night? THE PEOPLE! These were some of the most interesting, best dressed, and NICEST folks around! You had fashion designers and DJs from Japan mingling with bankers from Europe and Nigerian oil tycoons. CRAZY DIVERSE!

Anyways, enough rambling. Here are some pictures from early in the night before it turned into a crazy classy house party!

Shout out to my friend/photographer Julie Qiu for snapping these shots!

Sachin + Babi Cocktail Party and Trunk Show @ Misha Nicole NYC

Misha Nicole is a retail concept store (clothes + culture + art) that recently opened in NOHO and they asked us to DJ their Sachin + Babi trunk show/cocktail party.  Those in attendance included Indian supermodel Nina Manuel, actress/personality Neelu Sodhi (both pictured above left), and fashion photographer Shawn Punch.  With the weather being so nice, I threw on some smooth goodness while folks sipped on sparkling wine and browsed the impressive storefront.

Using my new toy (Vestax VCI-300) for the first time (basically an all in one DJ unit… don’t worry, we still use turntables at weddings!), I was able to record what was playing with a touch of a button.  Here’s a 20 minute taste of the smoothness (80s/90s/R&B) I was spinning that night… just in time for SUMMER!

Taste of Success 2011 @ Providence NYC

Over 400 people packed the Providence NYC on a rainy Thursday night for the 4th Annual Taste of Success presented by Streetwise Partners.   The Remixologists provided the soundtrack for the 2nd year in a row and we did not disappoint.  On my short breaks from spinning, I made the rounds and stuffed myself silly with all the great foods (my favorite: tuna tartare from Buddakan) and drinks (MORE MOET!) from the wonderful sponsors that support this great event and organization.

After the event ended at 10pm, everybody moved to the downstairs club area and danced the night away.  Don’t be fooled by the suits and and proper attire, people GOT DOWN on the dance floor!  I am barred from posting any afterparty pictures… just kidding… sort of. 🙂

Throwback: DJ Mike & DJ 9-Volt Spinning The 2010 Halloween & Homecoming Celebration At The Hall of Flags (Houston Hall @ University of Pennsylvania)

Going back to campus (Go Quakers!) is always weird for me. No matter how many times I go back, I go through the same thing. I look around and the buildings look the same for the most part. There are still kids walking around headed to the cafeteria, to class, to the library, etc.

But no matter how little things have changed from the time when I was in school, things are invariably different.  I will not see a familiar face in the crowd. I will not run into a crowd of friends who will drag me to the bar instead of letting me study at the library. And parties? Forget about it. The chances of me seeing my friends’ faces light up when I play “our song” are slim to none.

Unless, of course, we’re DJ’ing the PAACH Anniversary Party and the Taste of Penn Homecoming Celebration.  Mike and I did just that this past Halloween.   It was great to see everyone getting down to the old songs, especially the line dancing. It was also one of the rare times that I got to walk around in public as my true self. That’s right, you heard it here first. DJ 9-Volt is just my cover identity. In reality, I am The Flash. And I’ve been working out. Can you tell?

In any case, all of the reminiscing led me to post this mix. I hope those of you listening can share in my nostalgia.

Peace and lumpia grease.

– 9Volt
