Wedding DJ

Brooklyn Wedding DJ

You have found your dream venue and have decided on a DJ over a band.  Now the question is… how to choose a Brooklyn wedding DJ that will elevate your event (and not make it a dud.)

For most couples that are engaged and planning their big day, finding the right wedding entertainment is on the top of their list of MUST HAVES.  It makes total sense as the MUSIC is often what the guests remember most.

Remixologists is built on that foundation and the amazing feedback from our clients.  We want every couple to have their wedding day be one of the best days of their lives.  One that not only they, but their friends & family continue to talk about for years to come!

So how does that happen?  What makes a good wedding DJ?  Read on for our top tips on choosing the right Brooklyn wedding DJ.

1. MUSIC ARTISTRY

1. MUSIC ARTISTRY

IT'S #1 FOR A REASON

The music at a wedding not only sets the mood for the day, but it also tells your story and is crucial to the wedding being remembered not just as a classy event (which most wedding are.)

And being a DJ involves way more than pushing “play” on a Spotify playlist or mixing the top 20 songs from every decade.

There’s a level of creative artistry that a true DJ develops over years and years of curating music and playing in front of crowds that’s invaluable to your experience.  It’s not only about picking and playing the right songs (important), but when to play them during a particular time of the night and how that relates to the songs played before and after (even more important.)  This is hard to quantify as it’s part science & art, but you can gauge the effectiveness of a DJ by how they makes you feel as you listen to them play.

So the best thing you can do is listen to mixes from your wedding DJ candidates to see how they fare.  How are their song selection, mixing skill, and transitions?  Do they sound like every other DJ you’ve heard or are they unique in their style?  Are you bobbing your head singing along at work or busting out your favorite dance moves as you cook dinner in the kitchen?

You can always listen to mixes from our talented DJs to see how they stack up!

2. ORGANIZED AND PUNCTUAL

2. ORGANIZED AND PUNCTUAL

You'll want this... trust us.

While the music sets the vibe and is super important to the success of your wedding, the plethora of production details are the nuts and bolts that determine the flow of your wedding day.  Whether you have a wedding planner and/or day of coordinator (both can be very helpful!), your DJ will be in charge of the sound system & microphones and plays a huge part in ‘running the show.’

It’s important to vet your DJ candidates on their organizational skills & punctuality from the very start.  Here are some questions to think about during the discovery & booking phase:

  1. Are they engaged with my story and vision?
  2. Do they answer my emails in a timely fashion?  Show up to calls/meetings promptly?
  3. Are they thoughtful and detail oriented with their responses?
  4. What is their process of working with you after booking?
  5. Do they make the process efficient & enjoyable?

3. KIND & FLEXIBLE

3. KIND & FLEXIBLE

Dealing with the intangible.

No matter how large or small, a wedding is a production that involves many moving pieces.  And when there are moving parts, there’s a chance of things not going according to plan.  Here are a few real world examples experienced in our wedding DJ journey:

  1. Scheduled snowstorm the night before the wedding.  Our DJ arrived before the snow started and stayed the night at the hotel to insure we didn’t get stuck in the snow.  On the day of, the ceremony & cocktail hour musicians from a 3rd party canceled and we saved the day.
  2. Heavy rains led to an outdoor ceremony moved indoor… subsequent area flooding resulted in the parents of the bride and the best man arriving 2 hours late (stuck in traffic.)  The ceremony subsequently moved a 2nd time to the reception tent where cocktail hour ended up occurring first.  (Did you follow all that?)
  3. Bride & groom had a freakish fall during the reception as dinner was concluding.  Groom ended up in the hospital with stitches on his head.  This was the same wedding as #2.  Bride came back from the hospital and danced her face off with the guests.  Her review is featured below.  You’ll have to guess which one. 🙂

All that to say you want a wedding DJ who is kind & flexible and can be a calming presence in times of chaos and uncertainty.  Someone who can help steer the ship in the right direction with well timed announcements and the appropriate music vibe for the situation.

CONCLUSION

CONCLUSION

Hiring the RIGHT wedding DJ will make a huge impact on your big day.

So much of your wedding day-from the ceremony to the reception-hinges on having the perfect vibe to set the stage for an awesome celebration.  The wrong DJ can easily ruin the atmosphere with the wrong music selection, a misspoken word, or a missed opportunity.

A wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event.  Be sure to do your homework and invest intelligently in setting the right vibe with the right DJ for you.

If music is a MUST or in your top 3, stop reading and just book them—there is no need to delay for further research. But if you must know: I found the Remixologists featured in Style Me Pretty and after some research, I pretty much knew they were our vendor to beat—sadly, I wasn’t engaged yet.
